I Am Feeling Naked!

Well I am feeling a bit naked right now. I have become unplugged so to speak and I am feeling naked because of it. The Android phone has give up the ghost so after pain staking 1.5 hours on the phone with Motorola we decided it was best to send it in and have it worked on. See you in 10 days to 2 weeks. Then part two to the naked I have left the world of Microsoft. I am tired of being held hostage. Now I am still going to keep my net-book in the windows world just so I am not totally out of the loop. I am just sick and tired of windows digging in my back pocket every time I turn around wanting more money to prop up their programs. In the world of Linux 80% and I am being optimistic when I say that I can find those programs for free and not getting them illegal I might add. So this is going to be a short and sweet post today. I must admit I am having some growing pains as far as the learning curve on this one, but hey maybe you can teach old apes new tricks!

So I have gray just about all white hair so now it means I go bald again if I pull it all out trying to learn a new subject. Wish me luck..or better yet Mellody luck as she has to put up with my grumbles from behind the screen.

Until next time

Cheers

Live By The Sword Die By the Sword!

I turn on my TV first thing this family day morning to hear that 3 people perish in a snow mobile accident or better put an avalanche. This had happened in Central British Columbia, Golden to be exact. Now what these people were doing was marking their territory with their sleds. They run as far as they can, and then have the machine either top over the top of a hill or cliff, or fall over backwards and cause a backslide of snow better known as an avalanche. Now some people are equipped with transceivers and beacons others are not that smart and they go in with nothing. I ask what should we do with these extreme adrenaline junkies? They cost our emergency evacuation groups large dollars to come save this person or people.

Now I do not say people do not have a right at their fun. I just ask to what cost is that fun dictated? I think if you want this kind of fun you should have a stand by rescue team ready, and waiting to dig your butt out of the snow when that avalanche falls down on your head. Now lets talk about whether it should be a mandatory occurrence that you wear the necessary equipment, and what fines are charged against you if they find you without it on. Now there is the bigger picture of death, but people have understand if you do not wear the equipment you are signing your own death warrant and could be charged accordingly.

Now there is the sad times of the family that lost there loved ones, and there is friends and co-workers that struggle with that loss, but as my title states you live by the sword, and Die By The Sword! If you want to play in those extreme sports you have to be aware that they come at a consequence. Your loved ones have to be prepared that there may be a day that you may go out and not come home. The famous last words I heard on a news cast the other day; "people die every day so if you can die doing something you love that is the only way to go!" Spoken by an extreme adrenalin junkie. Don't they have an special air about them?

The last subject I want to touch on is helmets. Now you might find me a real hypocrite on this one as I don't think helmets make much difference whether it be on a ski hill or on a motorcycle. Now by law I have to wear one on a bike, and you can bet it is the smallest I can get away with legally, because when you bounce off the ground or pavement at any speed all the helmet is there to do is make your head look pretty at the end of the day. Your brain is still going to look like jello if you make that big bounce if it is on a ski hill or on the hi-way. Case in point a gentleman from Ontario had a helmet on runs into tree dead as nit. So tell me what good did that helmet do? Now if he would have not had the helmet on the end result would have been the same except we can feel sorry for him because he took all the precautions. END RESULT PEOPLE HE IS STILL DEAD! Damn the animal kingdom can be cruel but none the less it weeds out the gene pool doesn't. Another short story I had a cousin that hit a tree head on with a full face helmet on a motor cycle doing approx. 25 miles per hour when he hit that tree you would have thought that helmet would have saved him. The base of the helmet was driven in David's neck and it snapped it clean. So tell me where helmets make a difference?

Well I feel better now I think I have probably ruffled enough peoples feathers. So remember not to eat yellow snow in the winter that is your tip of the week!

I am going to wander back in the jungle so:

Cheers

A Solution To the Problem...

I would like to start off to say that I am writing this and it is against my moral fiber, but at some point we need to take a stand in society to make a stand. This is one of those times! Some of you may remember Tienanmen Square. Now some might say that was wrong others may say it was well deserved either way 400 to 800 people perished that day in 1989. Now I come from a spiritual background and killing senseless people is not what I believe in, but as I said earlier one needs to take a stand!

So when we see issues like Egypt or Iran, Japan, or were ever a solution needs to be found and eradicated. How much time has to pass before one brings in the army and blast the living shit out of them to set a precedent. So the next time these Jack offs decide to make their latest protest they will think twice.

We need to follow China when they are sentenced to life in prison they are taken out back and a bullet is put in their head. In India you steal they chop off your hand! The shock factor sends a message that this stuff cannot continue!

So now that I have vented I can say there needs to be a solution to the problem! The guidelines are set so if the peons of the free world want to act out they know what their end result will be. Tell you as I may people will take note if we send people to take care of business!

Now on a calmer note I am going to wonder back to the jungle and have a great day, and weekend.
Until next time remember opinions are like noses everyone has one just some are bigger then others.

The Rodent Has Spoken!

Well As we sit here at -9 with a wind chill of -18 A the rodents of the world have spoken. Residents in Central and Eastern Canada tired of icy temperatures and heavy snowfall in recent weeks may be interested to know that two famous Canadian groundhogs predict an early spring.

Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam and Ontario's Wiarton Willie both predicted an early spring on Groundhog Day Wednesday.

Folklore has it that if a groundhog sees his shadow on Groundhog Day he'll flee to his burrow, heralding six more weeks of winter, and if he doesn't, it means spring is around the corner.

Balzac Billy did not see his shadow so he was the only one that that went against the grain. So as folklore has it we will have 6 more weeks of winter. Really that is kind of a good thing, because if spring started right away you and I not would be freezing our brass balls off we would be building the ark and flooding our way over the 49th parallel.

Environment Canada notes it's another six weeks until winter is officially over -- despite today's furry prediction.

You know I have made an observation as I watch the news out west we seem to handle the frozen wasteland just fine. The poor people to the eastern provinces they seem to be getting hammered with snow and cold, and they seem to take it like it the Maritimers that they are. The Folks to the west they seem pretty soft too. It is us prairie folk that can take a storm face on and bare our teeth with grit, and say we are tough old shit's. The poor eastern folks in Toronto they are softer then the Pillsbury doe boy. They can't drive in the white stuff and PLEASE if it gets below -10 they frozen to the dock of the day. It is a good thing I guess to live in the prairies!

Well it is time to get this off to press so I am going to wonder off in the snow white forest!

Who is The Media?

As I sit back and watch the troubles in Egypt, and various other problems throughout the world I wonder out loud who really is the media in all these worldly up risings? You have Skype, You tube, and various other left wing media types then you have the normal media type of CNN, CBS, ABC then you have the extreme right with MSNBC or Fox news. Then one has the guy on the street corner taking video with his camera phone they call that viral video which usually finds a home on You- Tube at some point.

Then we have the issue of print media and the picture game with the paparazzi. I ask who or what has fair right to this mess. Again I ask what is really media? When we buy a newspaper is that the only media that that we should follow? Then there is the TV news I will give you an experiment. Take an issue that would be seen either right across the world or in our case right across Canada. Now watch the different news rooms as they report the same story. So unless you are right there at the event what is right? who do we believe, because you are going to get a different spin on the same story. My results is view the pictures the best you can as pictures speak 1000 words. filter trough what the reporter says, and at the end of the cast you might have a pretty good cast. Like I say pictures speak 1000 words.

Now we have our public funded projects in the USA it is called Public Broadcasting System or if it is radio it is NPR. In Canada we have CBC Radio and TV. Believe it or not the CBC is a bigger albatross around our neck then PBS or NPR will ever be. In th
e USA people run the stations. In Canada the Governments run the stations. So when we have the provincial and Federal Governments attached to anything all you hear is a huge sucking sound!

Well I think that the USA model is better run as it is still a public support, but the governments are not pouring 100, 000 thousand here and there and every where for a make work project for some government son or daughter to try and get their 15 minutes of fame.

Call me old school, but I like the reporter that you watched at 6pm that had some creditability almost rock star status if you ever run across him in your town because your town was being featured on the 6pm news because you did something special. Not like today where every Tom, Dick, and Harry has a 12mp camera phone with a direct link to You Tube or some other viral site that will give you your 15 minutes of fame because don't kid yourself the big wonders of the world are Jonesing for their next story.

Until next time stay warm....If you see my Brass balls can you return then to 253 fleet st Medicine Hat Alberta......

Run away Devil Makes It Big In Medicine Hat

Well as the people of Medicine Hat silently mourn the loss off 3 people in a quite neighborhood in their city. The neighbors feel uneasy, the little boy across the street will never get that picture out of his head on that fateful day. Law-enforcement will sleep very uneasy for many years seeing those bludgeoned bodies of the two parents not to mention the poor little brother that had his head pealed off his head like a hard boiled egg. Now the boy friend sits in an Alberta jail getting to relax on the tax payers dollar boasting he set Alberta history for the youngest murder. Now that in my mind is not something to be proud of! Now the 12 year old has skated through the system making the occasional appearance in front of the court she has a 3 step system in front of the parole board asking a graduated visits to banks, malls, exposure to the general population. It sounds good, and they say she is a low risk to offend. It sounds good when Charles Manson won't re-offend either, but he is certainly not up for boy scout of the year award. Now the only thing I can say the run away devil did was pull the wool over the tax payers eyes. She was the puppet master in a very twisted tail. Her over hormone boy toy danced as she pulled his strings. Now her brain has been untwisted like yesterdays laundry. Now she is crazy like a fox walking them through everything they want to here so when she turns 22 she can jump out in the big bad world non the wiser ready to carry on her life as she knows it untouched, unmarred. Do you want her looking after her children in a daycare? Do you want to maybe want her teaching your child as a grade school teacher? I am not sure about you , but I would say no! Anyway it is time to jump on the parole board, your members of parliament, and say we have to say no to the The Run Away Child. It needs a second look and tighten up an already broken system.

FAREWELL TO FAST EDDY!

Hail hail our premier is stepping down. So what does that mean? Has he out lived his usefulness? Who can we bring in to fill his shoes? So many questions so little time! How much time are we going to before we will be going to the poles now? What will this person need to do. What trait above being smarter then fast Eddy with this person need? Personally a drunk from the stroll could do better then what fast Eddy did. We need a common person, someone that can relate to the people. There is other people with an agenda that they want see meet so do we sleep with enemy and take another chance? Or jump headlong into something like the Alberta Party. Or you can totally regress and vote liberal or NDP. The key here is just get out and vote when the time comes.

Well I think it is time I wander back into the frozen north and enjoy the world as we know it!

Ok With The Snow Already!

You know it is funny when we live in Southern Alberta and we need to get around with dog sled or skidoo. We live in the banana belt where it is warm and balmy where Chinook's are some what of the norm. I have lived in Southern Alberta my 43 years and never in my life have I seen out trans-Atlantic hi-way closed for 2 days leaving drifts of one story in some of the curves of the road. The Mountain passes have been closed on an on going bases because of avalanche concerns. Not to mention the concerns we are going to have when all this snow decides it is going to melt in the spring. Mother nature is really challenging our public works department to get the proper plow job done before we are able to dig our precious 4 wheeled rolling companions out of that snow drift at the end of our street.

So Snow takes a beating on local buildings. 2 flat roofs on two buildings have recently been the demise in our city. It just goes to show you flat roofs are not the answer for today's construction. Thankfully in both cases neither building had people in it so no one was hurt. One was a Teen Club House the other was just storage. It will be determined whether they will rebuild again as it is in flood plain.

Well as the sun sets on the snow banks of the north I the Big Ape of the North better known as the Silver Back of the 49th bid you farewell once more.......

Welcome to 2011

Well as we dust off ourselves from 2010 and ring 2011 in the Grumpy old Monkey and The Trainer hope you had a great festive season! If you did not well lets look at 2011 and say well lets bring it in with a bang! Hoist a few for me until you feel that it has been great. As usual Santa smiled very graciously upon me and the zoo trainer. We are very lucky at best.

I would like to shift gears a bit and bring up a point that you may or may not know is a soft spot in the old apes heart. I long for the day to dust my pipes off and be back on the old radio. who knows whether this will ever see a dream come true, but I did see a good will story on the news this morning that I felt I just compelled to share with you. There was a homeless guy in New York who was standing on the street corner that said he would work with his voice. When you heard this guy speak he had the golden tones of deep bass of Oak Ridge Boys. You know the guy I mean he just gave shivers down your spine. Well someone did pick him up and they they offered him a job and did I mention he was a recovering addict? So now he is involved with one of the big radio stations which broadcasts both the base ball, and basketball games. So I guess you can say as long as he does not let his stardom go to his head he will be fine. His one wish was make it back to see his Mothers nursing Home and visit her before she passes. So hopefully that can be achieved.

So where are you with your resolutions of the new year? Personally I do not make resolutions if I want to do something I do not wait until January 1st to do it. It is known that 20% of the resolutions are already on the ropes, and by months end 80% are cast aside for another year. I am more of a goal orientated person so if it is broken then you pick yourself up dust yourself off and start again and hope we go a bit farther.

So I have a little tid bit to share with you. I let my hair grow again. Now I am not saying how far this is going, but I would like to not cut it for a length of time along with my goatee. Now I have to take meds to counteract my hair as I allergic to my own hair have been since I was about 18, but I have known as i have got older it is more prominent. So I figure I am taking meds anyway so what is a couple more here and there...lol

Well I just wanted to send a shout out out, and scream the top of my lungs I love you! 21 years on January 5th Mellody give into my wild monkey business! Then it became sweet monkey love!!! So it will be 16 years of wedded bliss. Wow we have been together a long time! You know if I would have committed a crime rather then got married I would almost be ready for 25 year release....Just kidding my love you are the best thing that happened to me. I have so married up!!! I am sure Mellody could have done better, I think she is stuck with me now!

Well I think it is time for me to wonder back in to the jungle for another day. Remember here is a great winter tip no matter how thirsty you are it is not mountain dew DON`t eat the yellow snow!

until next time.......

A week of cleansing...

Well I sit here after breakfast scrolling through my phone reading my twitter links, and just finished listening to Jann Arden on CBC radio. She brought up a point that got me thinking are we as Canadians just too proper to have a paparazzi where as the USA they are media whores, and will do anything to get their 15 minutes of fame. Look at Britney Spears, OJ Simpson, and Paris Hilton they seem to think because they have a celebrity lifestyle they are above the law. They seem quite offended or shocked when they get their fingers slapped by the long arm of the law. In their case their money seems to buy their way to freedom or at least to a place where very little time is served! Now if that would have been a Canada we would have been swinging from the nearest tree or jailed for the rest of our natural life. The cast of Corner Gas would be walking if they drove drunk in Calgary for the next year, do you think that one of the cast of Little Mosque on the Prairie gets caught with a stash of Mary Jane that they would slide? Not likely is my comment to that. So with us as Canadians uptight and straight laced for a reason we don't feel like spending a night in crow bar hotel with a girl friend named Bubba we don't do the thing our brothers and sisters do to the south!

The Hells Angels are Coming! The Hells Angels are coming! Lock your doors and guard your small children! PLEASE give me a break!!!!!! What a waste of tax payers dollars if I have ever seen one. Our Law enforcement has created an alarmist hysteria over nothing. Our province has created a task force to follow these guys around like a dog and pony show for what I ask? If you got a beef with them charge them, and let that be that! Yes I am sure there is people from the criminal element. Hey sparky here is a news flash; there is good and bad in every group! Have you seen a clean lawyer? It is a bunch of men that enjoy the commonality of the Harley Davidson, and riding. If these gum shoes can actually pin something on them, charge the person it has no real relevance to the group does it? If a doctor is busted for drug possession does that mean that all doctors are junkies? The HA (hells angels) are all about branding. They are no different then Harley Davidson or the Blue Thunder riders. There is some over zealous politicians that are trying to make names for themselves. My motto is if they are guilty then take them away and let them do the time, but leave them alone if they are not doing anything wrong. The extra law enforcement, and the chopper in the air is out tax dollars wasted. Now they say well if they did not do this and would not have had the extra enforcement all hell could have broken out. I would say that could be the case, but a plane could crash if it takes off on a run way. My point is let the current law enforcement do their job, and if there is a criminal to be busted they will do it. They don't need choppers flying around? The extra dog and pony show is really not needed. Anyway let it be what it is they were here they created extra dollars for our economy that I guess we should be thankful for to house and feed these clowns while they were here. so I guess we should be thankful for that, and their dollars and move on.

We as North Americans really have not learned much in life we are always trying to keep up with the Jones: Case in point: In the USA they spent 1000000 dollars inventing a pen that wrote in 0 gravity. So the Russians thought about this for a bit and decided they needed something to do the same thing, but the more they thought about it they had the answer. They would use what they have been using for years with great results, it is called a pencil. Go figure we in North America boast that we are the more superior culture, but when it comes to spending money we are the winner 100 times over.

So in conclusion I would like to comment on the situation of the Muslim Mosque at Ground Zero at the New York Trade Center. Ok can someone please tell me why? Such a sensitive situation will be put up for all of the free world to see. Sensitivity should be taken in to account in this matter. Religion and politics should not be mixed in my opinion. World wars have been started over these type of matters. Is the USA looking for another ass whooping? They are kind of tapped out playing over in Afghanistan. Mr. Obama has kind of cut his political throat so to speak. Our Fore Fathers would roll over in their graves if they seen what was going on down at ground zero. For the record I am not against the Muslims having a Mosque I just think the location needs to be re-thought. I am all for people having a place to pray, but lets be a little more sensitive of the location. Come on a majority of the key Muslims feel the situation is some what sensitive, and might be better served to be built at a different location.

Just remember People spend a lifetime searching for happiness; looking for peace. They chase idle dreams, addictions, religions, even other people, hoping to fill the emptiness that plagues them. The irony is the only place they ever needed to search was within. -Ramona L. Anderson

Until next time.....

Where would you be without technology?

I have a lot of time on my hands as of late.  I got thinking, where would I be without the technology that I have today?  What did we do without cell phones, computers, PDA’s, GPS’s, you get the idea.  On occasion I will take a time were I go unplugged. What is that you ask?  I shut off all my electronics, and vow I will leave them off for about 48 hours. The truth be known that is all the time I can go before I go into total technology deprivation.  How long can you go without getting caught up in the rat race of electronics? Now I know phones and PDA’s or even computers are a common place in our jobs.  Even when we have the  occasion  to get away from our electronic tethers we insist to still keep them at out finger tips.  Why is that? Why can we not walk away from our gadgets?  What makes our time any different now then  yester year?  Is our time any better then say the time of say 20 years ago? Some would say technology is a must; others might disagree with you, and think the advancement of time has  been made worse by the technological advancement.  I feel that we needed the advancement of technology, but I think we need to add a caveat that we need to take a break from our gadgets.  Enjoy our families, go out into the outdoors. Enjoy our lives away from little screens, alarms, and synthetic voices .  I encourage you right after you read this to take the rest of the day, and take a loved one or your child out, and go spend the rest of the day without  technology.  Go for a walk, ride a bike,  go for a drive in the country without a GPS.  Just remember not to stay away too long it makes a lot of work to get caught back up with your email…smile

Until next time

Cheers

What a ride it has been!

Well as the title depicts it has been a very interesting ride.  Now there is no point to apologize for my tardiness.  It is what it is.  I have been in the hospital for a few weeks.  As the doctor explained to me at one point I was knocking on heavens door.  I have come to the conclusion though the devil is scared of me, and the good lord does not know where my place is in the big house yet.  So I was sent back to stir the pot some more! Lol   Now the electronic gods seem to be messing with me also. They say every thing happens in threes.  Well I just had the third piece of electronics pack it in.  First a nurse dropped my laptop in the hospital. All I got was a sorry I am sure it will be alright though. Ya right she toasted the board.  Not that I was thinking of getting a new computer for work, but it was not meant to happen like this.  Then a few weeks later my blackberry decided to pack it in. Now wife comes home this afternoon and tell me the truck air conditioner has decided to pack it in. Well I up graded my computer. I took a chance on the android phones by Google.  as for my air conditioner well I have a parts truck so I think my AC is coming from the donor truck.  Well as for the weight loss I have lost 57 LBS since March so I guess counting those calories have been all the effort. Anyway I guess this crusty old monkey has got you back up to speed on everything at the zoo. Well baring anymore trips to the vet clinic or the animal hospital you should be hearing from me again soon.

Until then

Cheers from the mad monkey :-)

Has Santa Got Commercialized?

So Santa has come and went. Did you get all that you expected, or were you on his naughty list and he gave you a lump of coal and a cold potato? Well I guess the old ape flew under his radar this year and was still on his good list, as usual I made out like a bandit! How Christmas has changed from yesteryear? Now I feel I am a very a spiritual person, and there is a message attached with Christmas hence forth the first part of Christmas being Christ. Now whether you believe or not you can still feel that Christmas is about family and kids. Getting together with family have a great reason to have a great meal, and one more reason to spoil your kids and or grand kids rotten. Well that is my point I think the message as been lost on this festive time. We all except that certain jobs like essential services have to work on this day. For example Fire fighters, police personnel, Hospital staff should be on this list! As we headed back home on boxing day all full of turkey and wonderment we pulled into a McDonald's before we headed home to scarf down a burger before we head for the open road. To my wife's astonishment McDonald's was open from 10AM to 5PM on Christmas day. My wife comes back to the vehicle in total disbelief for a burger joint to be open on turkey day. My wife says unless they started serving turkey burgers who wants a Big Mac on Christmas day?

Now I explained to her which she already knew the Jehovah Witness religion does not recognize Christmas as they do not believe in Christ or God. She still felt that was not reason enough to serve a Big Mac's on Christmas day. She asked in disbelief who operates this place scrooge himself?AGH!!! Now that brings me to my next point have we lost the point in today's message? Christmas is not about family and fellowship anymore. It is about one of the biggest money making holiday's of the year. Look at boxing day it is an absolute free for all on boxing day as to what can we buy on the cheap for us the greedy little consumers that we are. Back in the day Boxing day was designed for you to return uncle Fred's pink blender that you would have no use for, and get something you really wanted. Now it is a message of shop till you drop and what great deals can we get? I have heard some families even make it an annual event, and do their Christmas shopping on that day when everything is so cheap, and then actually celebrate their own Christmas on the 27th ot 28th. Who do we have to blame for this, the retailer or the consumer? Well without the consumer asking for this or expecting this the retailer is only following the market trend.

Now if you look at the history of the bible Jesus was born depending on the interpretation you except. Some say in the spring around March others think he was born in September, but winter is actually a Pagan holiday noting the time of winter solstice of December 22nd. None the less others say it is a business idea of the end of the year and shop keepers are giving it one last ditch effort to boost the yearly sales before the new year starts.

So is society losing the Christ in Christmas and just going to the commercialization of the holiday? Like I said before I am not a holy roller by any means, but I do think that Christmas is about kids and family with gift giving intertwined in the holiday. It should be not who got what, and how much you can break the bank to keep up with the Jones. With credit cards being so free these days people almost make it a game in some cases to see who can out spend the other just because they can. I ask the question because that person bought me a Rolex make them any better person then if they could only afford a Timex? Is it not about the fact that they were considerate enough to see that I may need or want a watch rather then how much it cost. Some people live on a beer budgets all year so they can have a champagne lifestyle for one day in the year. Personally I would I think that is wrong. As we get over a record setting recession the people who are in banking warn people to live within their means or come the new year we could be in for a whole world of hurt when the bills roll in! Why take till the holidays text year to pay for this Christmas, be inventive. Some call it cheap. I call it thinking outside the box. Make something that you know the person would like. I think gifts like this are better because they show the person you were thinking enough to share your craft with them. If you are not crafty, try making a card inviting the person out to dinner or better yet over to your house cooking them their favorite meal. Go on-line there are many ideas far beyound these few to get your creative juices going. Just remember it is not the price of the gift it is about that fact you thought about them at all.

Well I am going to cuddle up and nurse this cold I got as a gift on Christmas day. Personally that is one gift I would rather take back from the wife. See our generosity is so big here we even give each other our colds. Share and Share alike my Mother used to say. Lol

Until next time remember happiness depends on ourselves.
Happy New Year to all my readers From The Ape Trainer and the crusty old ape may 2010 be all that you wish for!

So What Is Happening In The Jungle?

So tell me oh wise one what has been happening in the jungle that has kept you away for so long? Well folks believe it or not the old ape has got busy. We are proud to announce that there has been a new addition added to our pack so that is where some of my time has been going. You know daddy time and outings outside. Also I have been busy at the production company. I had just completed a project with great success. My first run with one of my new pieces of software, so it was a bit trying as it was a learning curve, but none the less we did a bang up job and the customer was more then happy so on all accounts Big Ape Productions is now going to move forward. I have already got another job lined up for the new year. Amazingly enough I have just scored a line on another photographer that is willing to promote our VHS to DVD and Slide show production work. So if you ever need a good photo studio go check out SC Photos and they will take care of you for sure.

The weight loss you are wondering... how is the weight loss going well no news is good news. I have been hovering off and with a 1.5KG gain and loss so I consider that as a plateau so in all perspectives, I am hanging in there considering what time of year it is.

So with my Christmas shopping complete and travel plans finalized we are officially ready for the festive season. We are heading up to my sisters Christmas Morning spend the day with her and my Brother-in-law in Brooks, and then home boxing day to get ready for Mel to return back to work Sunday. No rest for the weary they say..lol

Here is a couple of pictures of our new addition. Her name is Libby. She is a retired breeder dog. She is 7 years old and the kennel we acquired her from was looking for a for ever home for her in her retirement. She is an absolute sweet heart as you will see.

Well time waits for no one. It is my time to get back to a few final things getting ready for the old boy with the white beard. Enough out of the peanut gallery I only have a goatee..hehehehehehe Anyway we will send Christmas wishes a bit later until then.....

Remember Santa only comes once a year, aren't you glad you are not him.....

I'm Back!!!! Just when you thought it was safe to enter the Jungle ....

Well I would like to start off and thank everyone who sent well wishes to Mel and I. It is nice to know that we are in your thoughts and prayers during times like this. One does not really understand until you have times like these how much you are loved. It seems like at least once a year I have to test the health care system just to see if it is running smoothly. Well I am proud to report for the most part it is limping along the best it can. I do want to say that I stress MOST of the nurses are wonderful. If they had to deal with a crusty old ape like me, and stay smiling they must have been true angels. Now the Doctors on the other hand they were only batting 500. I had a couple that were great, but I seen a couple I would not send across enemy lines just because I would feel sorry for the care the enemy would get. I am the first to say the system is broken, but for the most part the front line staff is doing the best they can. I do stress that we all need to lobby our local politicians and tell them they need to fix the health care system. As I can say it is broken I think beyond total repair. I will say it once I will say it 100 times, we need to model our system over in Sweden. That is a system that works and that is a mix of public and private. So when you are told that privatization is a bad thing take a look around, and see that private is already here. It just needs to be managed better. That is for another post though. Maybe I will add a suplemental post later. Anyway lets talk abought what we had directed this blog to be as of late a tracking device for my weight loss experiece.

Well you ask how is the whole experience going now that I have been sick and in hospital? Well are you sitting down I am 42 pounds lighter then when we first talked. Now I am a realist and know I will probaly gain a few pounds back just because the last 5 days in the hospital I was on a liquid diet. Hence that is why I had made a post in facebook celibrating my love for Jello...lol So what was wrong with me to result in 5 days of a liquid diet?

Well lets talk about the symptoms before we get to what was wrong with me. I had been hemoraging, and passing blood off and on for a couple of weeks. Now all sorts of things come to mind at least with the old ape anyway as to what this could be. Hemroids are the first thing. The second choice would have been my diverticulites.(I am not sure that is spelt right, but I think I am close) For you who does not know what that is it is in the family of IBS (irratable bowel sysdrome). Now it was off and on, but towards the end it was on more then off and it was looking like small farm animals were getting butured. So I let that go on for about 3 days and generally feeling crappy before I thought it might be time to go visit my emergency room. No the topping symptom was and this was the one I was more concerned with was I lost my left side of my face. My left eye was running consistantly and I was drooling at bit. Now what comes to mind was possably a slight stroke. I did not have any other symptoms. Head ache, weakness, trouble talking, confusion. Well other then the run of a mill of the fact of my usual ape confuson, the fact I talk like a monkey so there was nothing to worry about there, I never had a head ache and I am always in pain so really I am not sure if I would notice if anything was out of the norm anyway. Just to add icing on the cake my doctor does not practice in the city I live. Now you say you dumb ape with your medical problems why do you have a Dr. out of town of your residence, Because I could not get a Dr. in Medicine Hat after my Dr. that I did have lost his licence, and moved away. That is a story all on itself for another day. So I figured instead of going to my Dr. in Brooks 65 miles away from my home, and him panicing and sending me back to Medicine Hat hospital (it is a bigger hospital) I would just show up, and get the Dr. of the day, and see where that took me.

So now that we have all the interesting little details out of the way what as there results on their fact finding mission you ask? Well it turned out to be a bowel blockage, and the numbness in the face was something that I had heard the term, but knew nothing about. It was bells palsey. It is a fancy name for an infection in the facial nerves. Now HOW I contracted that is beyond me. They say it can be caused by cold sores, but I did not have a cold sore so the good lord only nows. So I am on some strong antibiotics for that. Now the blockage you ask, what did they do there? Well four bowel cleansers, and 3 1 liter enemas later I was back on the road, and clean as a whistle. Now the interesting part of this whole experience was the Colonoscopy that I had. Now they say they are not the most comfortable thing to indure. Basicly what they do is they go in the back door, and run your whole intestinal track right to the stomach enterance with a camera and light. It gives whole new meaning to going in a tight end and coming out a wide receiver...smile So they give me a shot in my interevenous and tell me that I should start to feel sleepy in a few minutes, and by the time of the procedure you may not be asleep, but are stoned enough to make it that you don't care what they are doing, or where they are going. Now keep in mind they gave me 100ml of what ever the drug was. Now for a averge person that would be enough to send them to pluto. I am thinking for an ape of my size it should have been about 3X that amount. Oh well what do I know!!! You have to understand I am a big gorilla obviously they never consulted the local vet as to how much to give an ape as 100ml never even made me goofy let alone sleepy. So about half way though the proceedure I looked over my shoulder and said to the Dr. I thought I was supposed to be asleep for this? He and his assitant praised me and kept on traveling saying they were about half way done. I thought I would have some fun and ask him if he could write me a note explaining to my wife that he did not find my head up there. He had a sence of humor though as he did say he come across a set of keys and wondered if I lost a set.lol He was a funny guy!!! NOT!!!! Anyway the procedure finished with the doctor saying my intestinal tract was pretty inflamed from the blockage, and he could see where it had been bleeding. All looked well know so he felt that I could recoup at home. Well you did not have to tell me twice I was out of there Thursday afternoon at about 4:30pm a week ago. I as told to just relax and let myself build up slowly.

Well I have done what the Dr. suggested rest and relaxation. I must admit that is all I felt like doing between the blood loss, and the infection it set the old ape on his butt! Now I am slowly starting to feel like the old ape again. I am afraid that now that I am back on food I might have gain a few pounds back, but I hope this is still a continued trail forward.

Remember life can be dramatic, and funny all in the same day!

Until next time keep smiling

I Have A Test Before Me

Well I sit here typing this and watching the Turkey Bowl. Having a life style change and approaching the holidays is going to be true test. Thanksgiving in my old world was just a warm up for the Christmas season. Well I am hoping that is not the case this year. I have not been perfect to say the least, but I have been better then in previous years. Some thing that my wife and I did is change the size of our dinner plates. When I was away at my training session we learned back in the day. I know this makes me sound really old. Back in the 70's the dinner plates were being made 6 to 8 inches in diameter. Now in the super size craze the plates have grown 10 to 12 inches. So when we were loading up before you can appreciate how much more we were getting with that extra 2 inches. Also if you went back for seconds well that much more again. So now that we turned to the about 8 inch plate it is less that you are ingesting even if you did go back for seconds.

Have freezer will benefit! This is day number two it is time to bless the freezer with a donation. I marvel at this idea as our freezer never was blessed with such a deposit in the past. We ate like kings, and never left to many morsels for the fridge monster either.

A friend of mine sent me this the other day. Reading stories like this gives me strength to know that I am not the only one have to fight this battle, and know it can be done as long as I am consistent. I have one up on this gentleman I have not had the heart attack....yet anyway.

Name: Keith Ahrens

Age: 47

Height: 5 feet 10 inches

Before weight: 414

How I gained it: I ha d followed a no-exercise, sedentary lifestyle for many years. I was troubled with weight as an adolescent but became more fit in my college years. After graduating college, I began to put on the pounds. I ate whatever I wanted, in whatever quantities I wanted. Most of the time, the food choices were high in fat, sugar and carbs. The food choices I made were of little regard or complete disregard to their nutritional content. I had dieted on and off for 23 years, only to relapse and put on more weight each time.

Breaking point: At the age of 45, I weighed more than 414 pounds and suffered a remote silent heart attack that resulted in open-heart coronary artery bypass surgery. After surviving this critical surgery, I invested all of my efforts into getting healthy and losing weight without surgery. It took a life-or-death crisis for me to realize how important it is to make healthy choices.

How I lost it: I had to admit to myself that I had a problem with food and was a compulsive overeater. I had to rid myself of the old emotions that caused me to overeat. Stress and anxiety were the typical triggers.

Losing weight for me has been a by-product of a healthy eating lifestyle combined with a good and active physical fitness program. Remember, there are 1,440 minutes in each day, and that would ultimately mean I work on a healthy lifestyle for 1,440 minutes each day.

I started to lose weight by making several immediate changes. First, I stopped drinking sodas, and I started drinking water, which, in my opinion, assists tremendously in losing weight. Second, I cut out fast food. I have not been to a drive-through in 2 and a half years. I have had people tell me it is extreme for them to give up their fried chicken, cheeseburgers, French fries and other fast foods that are high in fat, calories and sodium. I tell them that extreme to me is the 10-inch scar on my chest from my heart surgery, and each person somehow finds a way to relate to that.

I mostly eat lean meats (primarily chicken) and foods that have a good nutritional content. Most, if not all, of my entire sugar intake is from fresh fruit, and I am a big vegetable eater -- I love vegetables, especially grilled or baked veggies lightly seasoned with olive oil and kosher salt and pepper. I also try to stay away from bad carbohydrates and focus on high-fiber food products. For me, they just taste better.

I believe balance is the key. I used to eat 95 percent garbage and 5 percent good-for-you food. Now, I eat 95 percent good and 5 percent savory foods that I love. I find myself eating so much better, and when I do eat something in that 5 percent category, I enjoy it so much more. I can finally taste the foods now instead of the constant binge.

Physical fitness and activity is a very important aspect of any weight-loss program. I have become a certified fitness trainer, and I have studied the effects of exercise on the body. It is critical that the body assume some sort of activity to promote weight loss. It is just healthy to exercise routinely.

I do both cardio and weight resistance training. I normally work my cardio on a treadmill and bicycle. During the summer, I would tread water for an hour and play basketball, and I have just started to walk and jog slowly, keeping my knees in mind. The point is that I try to mix up my exercise program as not to get bored. But exercise has been critical to my success.

When I speak to companies or groups, I tell them to set small goals because if they fall off track for some reason, which happens to all of us, they can get back on track and still be close to the original goal. Keep moving the bar. Make small changes. Small changes practiced routinely in your lifestyle add up to huge successes over time.

Stay focused. It's worth it. It is amazing what we can accomplish as individuals. We must believe in ourselves. We must also realize that no one can do it for us. I tell people that the spirit of my message is: "No matter how bad things seem to be, there is always hope and anything is possible."

After weight: 214

I guess this gentleman has wrote a book. Out Running My Shadow and the author is himself Keith Ahrens.

If you have read the book drop me a line in my comments section as to what you thought of it.

Well I think I am going to wander back to the turkey bowl and be a typical guy and watch some football...So as my weigh in comes up this Friday 4 days away please say a silent little prayer wishing me the strength to get though this battle with the turkey. Grin...

Until next time remember the road to success is always under construction.

Cheers

Success Continues

Well I would like to say I was honestly missed. I received a message the other day asking how my qwest was going. Yes it has been a bit since I last posted. I am just caught up in this whole new world of food. Now instead of making my life about eating all the time. I am now taking my time and exploring how food can work for me. Exploring new receipts, finding new food combinations. Based on my formula it creates new opporitunities. I was just thinking I keep talking about this formula like everyone knows it. Actually chances are you have probably seen it, and just never paid it any mind as it is just the Canada Food Guide Serving suggestions.
Here is my new found wisdom:

Breakfast
2 fruits and or vegtables 1 serving equals one piece of fruit or 1/2 cup frozen
2 grains that could equal 3/4 cup of hot or cold cereal and a piece of toast or two pieces of toast
1 8oz glass of milk perferably 1% or 1.5oz of cheese or a yogurt cup
1 meat or alternative This could be two eggs, 2 tblsp of peanut butter or 2.5oz of meat

AM Snack
1 fruit or vegtable or 8oz glass of v-8 or tomato juice
1 grain product

Lunch
2 fruits and or vegtables
2 grain products
1 milk or alternative
1 meat or alternative equaling as close to 2.5 oz then you can get

PM Snack
1 fruit or vegtable
1 grain product

Dinner
2 Fruits and or vegtables
2 grain products
1 milk or alternative
2.5 oz of meat or appropriate alternative

Bed time snack
1 friut or vegtable

Things that you might not know. Consider potatos as vetables.
Weigh and measure to get portions.

I think the biggest thing that I had a huge learning curve on was weighing the food. I had what they call porportion distortion. Refer to the Canada food guide if you have any questions. Also it would not be a bad idea to get involved with your local dietian at your health center. Generally their services are free. You may need a doctor referal. If you are finding you don't want the snacks between meals then it is a no brainer don't eat them. As I found I actually was eating more food through out the day. It was different or better food, of course you cut out the sweets and the biggest thing for me as I mentioned before is the portion size. Alot of times I can say I was eating portion sizes of a small family.

Well I am proud to announce that this does work as I have lost 5lbs in two weeks. Now you might say that is not very much weight. Remember this, slow and steady will keep it off. You should not be losing much more then 2LBS a week. Now the first week or so you might lose a bit more because of water weight. So after a month I am down 9LBS. I have got a long walk in this journey, but I have to remember, It took me 42 years to put it on, it is going to take me more then a few weeks to take it off.

Until next time remember,in the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird, and people take Prozac to make it normal.

So You Can Teach Old Apes New Tricks!

Well it has been a bit since I last posted. I apologize, but the Old Ape has been on a mission. It does not seem to matter how old I get I am still learning! I have discovered that is a good thing. What is stimulating the brain cells of this old primate you ask? Well I have found the secret to life. Now before you go calling the closest nut busters it is true. Now what is the secret to life you ask? Eat right and live long! It is that simple. Now for some that is a no brainier. As you may or may not know I struggle with the battle of obesity. Hence the title the 500lb gorilla. Now whether I weigh 500lbs or 25lbs, it is also about heart. Regardless of the size of the monkey I will always have a huge heart. Well I have started a mission that is not going to be an easy adventure, but if you are interested it could be colorful. I am going to allow you to join me in the quest of slim living. I had an ah ha moment when I was attending some classes in Edmonton Alberta at the first of the September. I was welcomed to attend this program, now I sit back and wait and for my chance to meet with the head of the organization. I feel like a junior waiting to see if I am good enough to move up to senior status. Now along the process you have to take some classes in order to get in. Now there is 8 classes. The first one is mandatory. The other 7 are strongly suggested, but you don't have to take them. Now I have always been a proponent that no education is time wasted. Join me if you will in the coming months as I invite you to follow along with me as to how this crazy adventure is ironed out. So the majority of my posts in the coming weeks will reflect my adventures in the huge battle I will wage against the mighty demon of obesity!

Obesity is disease not a condition! So many people me included treat obesity all wrong. All I have to do is get these 40 pounds off and life will be golden. Exercise more, and cut back at the table. Refrain from the coffee time munchies, and quick as you can say Bob is your uncle those 40 pounds will melt off like an ice cream cone on the 4th of July. Well I am here to say ladies and gentleman it is simply not that easy! That is the problem in today's society everybody is looking for the easy button. Push the button, and a big cloud of smoke, and out of no were you are 50lbs lighter. I have learned that is the problem I have been looking for the easy button far too long. The easy button is broken. It is time to rewire the diagram for better living.

The big picture of obesity. A fantastic lady with the first name of Pat explained obesity like this. We were asked if any one of us contracted cancer, heart problems or diabetes we would look after the condition. Now ladies and gentleman the point we are missing is obesity too is a disease so lets treat it accordingly. That was a real ah ha moment for this old ape. I was arrogant in my thought process that I could do it on my own and just go on with my life as I knew it. Well that day never came, and would yo yo diet losing and gaining for some 35 years. For every pound I have lost I have gained them back with probably every pound back with an extra 10 or 15 to add as a token investment.

Well The plan is in place. The map has been drawn. The path with the least resistance has been forged. I have a mission 2 lbs a week for ever after. I have been engaged in the process for the past 2 weeks. 4 lbs later and we are on the road to a slim lifestyle. Hang on I am sure it is going to be a bumpy road, but none the less and interesting one at the end of the day.

Until next time remember Confucius says: Man who live in glass house should change clothes in basement.

Cheers
From the slightly slimmer old ape.

You Be The Judge

When it comes to religion I generally take the high road. I believe that everyone has a right to believe in what ever they want. I struggle at times with my religious ideals. I would say I guess that I am more spiritual then I am religious. I believe in god, but I also have a Buddhist ideology. I major in God, and I minor in Buddha. Now some might find that sacrilegious. I am what I am, and when the end comes I guess we will see where my place ends up.

This was sent to me and it makes a lot of sense, and I thought it was worth passing on. I think that is what is wrong with society today. Prayer was taken out of the schools, and "in God we trust" out of our civil buildings. That is what is wrong with spiritual ideals. People only believe on what works for them. It is all or nothing. We are a feel good society. What feels good we use, and the rest gets tossed to fringe groups to do with what they want. Pretty soon there is more fringe groups then the core groups. Then world ideals start to get all messed up. Read this next piece and you be the judge. Just remember this; "who am I to judge?" Judgment will be done by God himself.

This is a true story. The man who walks with God always gets to his destination. If you have a pulse you have a purpose.
The Muslim religion is the fastest growing religion per capita
in Canada , especially in the minority
races!!!
Last month I attended my annual training session that's required
for maintaining my federal prison security clearance.
During the training session there was a presentation by three speakers
representing the Roman Catholic, Protestant and Muslim faiths, who
explained each of their beliefs.
I was particularly interested in what the Islamic Imam had to
say. The Imam gave a great presentation of the basics of Islam,
complete with a video.
After the presentations, time was provided for questions and
answers.
When it was my turn, I directed my question to the Imam and
asked: 'Please, correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand that most
Imams and clerics of Islam have declared a holy jihad [Holy war] against
the infidels of the world and, that by killing an infidel, (which is a command to all Muslims) they are assured of a place in heaven. If
that's the case, can you give me the definition of an infidel?'
There was no disagreement with my statements and, without hesitation, he replied, 'Non-believers!'
I responded, 'So, let me make sure I have this straight.
All followers of Allah have been commanded to kill everyone who is not of your faith so they can have a place in heaven. Is that correct?'
The expression on his face changed from one of authority and
command to that of a little boy who had just been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.'
He sheepishly replied, 'Yes.'
I then stated, 'Well, sir, I have a real problem trying to imagine Pope John Paul commanding all Catholics to kill those of your
faith or Dr. Stanley ordering all Protestants to do the same in order to guarantee
them a place in heaven!'
The Imam was speechless!
I continued, 'I also have a problem with being your friend when you and your brother clerics are telling your followers to kill me!
Let me ask you a question: Would you rather have your
Allah, who tells you to kill me in order for you to go to heaven, or my
Jesus who tells me to love you because I am going to heaven and He wants you to be there with me?'
You could have heard a pin drop as the Imam hung his head in shame. Needless to say, the organizers and/or promoters of the
Diversification training seminar were not happy with my way of dealing
with the Islamic Imam, and exposing the truth about the Muslims' beliefs.
In twenty years there will be enough Muslim voters in Canada to elect the Prime Minister!
I think everyone in Canada should be required to read this. There
is no way this will be widely publicized, unless each of us pass it on!
This is your chance to make a difference...

This kind of gets you thinking! Anyway opinions are like certain pieces of our anatomy. Everyone has one, just some are bigger then others. Until next time remember If a man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we still have monkeys and apes?

Who Should Be Allowed To Breed?

I would like to state for the record that I do not have children, and do not plan to have children. My wife and myself came to that mutual decision. None the less I feel I still have a right to comment on this subject as a free thinking human being (or ape in my case...smile)

I sit back and remember a conversation I had with a RCMP constable in a coffee shop at 4AM one morning. He had just returned from a domestic disturbance call when he stated to the group of us; "You need a license to drive a car, You need a license to fish, You need a license to own a dog, You need a license to get married, Why the hell do you not need a license to have children?" For the record if people were checked out before procreating, and found out how many nut jobs there is in the world the world would be a pretty sparse looking planet. As there are just some people that should not be allowed to breed! Now all joking aside some people should not be allowed to procreate, because they are not smart enough to look after themselves let alone a child too! Now I am not saying that some people who need help in life should not be able to have children. I am talking about people that get up, hold down jobs, but just do not have the foresight to look past their own noses to think about someone else besides themselves let alone having to watch out for a defenseless child. We all know the type!

Baby ok after being left in hot car!
We all know as adults how hot it can get in a vehicle after sitting in it for a few minutes while some one runs in to a store for a few minutes. All that glass intensifies the suns rays to create a modern day easy bake oven if you will. Now pets are no different. People just don't think when it comes to pets either. Just cranking down a window a few inches is not the answer in keeping a pet safe. So why would we think that is suffice for a human life. Now before all the animal activists start a flood of hate mail. I consider any life as an important entity, but human life in the food chain is to be priority one next to an animal. It is what it is, or we would be running around eating little people along side all the other meat of the world. We have not got to that point yet in society thank god!

So have we got to the point that society has become such a wild west that it is the survival of the fittest? Thank god that there is people like that lady who cared enough to go investigate this situation, or we might be reading about different head lines regarding this young life. Now I think that there needs to be a BIG shame on you ministry of children services for not taking that child into protective custody. To say it was an momentary error in judgment is like saying I shot and killed you...me bad! Well it makes as much sense! Whether it is just a wake up call to this mother to teach her the value of her child. Send her to parenting classes. Maybe it is a case that she needs help, and that is fine too get her help if that is what she needs. Just remember there is a value to human life, and we need to be accountable for the lives around us regardless of the age! I think I have got my point across now go out and enjoy the day with your children and pets!

Until next time remember the good life, as I conceive it, is a happy life. I do not mean that if you are good you will be happy - I mean that if you are happy you will be good.

Respect For Mother Nature

Respect is something that is earned, not demanded! That is something that I have been preaching forever. Well can the same be said when that applies to weather. We all know Mother nature has a strong hand, and when she wants us kept in line she shows her force, and we snap to attention.

Now wind has always interested me in the fact it comes in at such varying degrees. Depending how hard it comes in depends on how much we enjoy it. Now when it is sweltering hot, and a cool evening breeze slips in we welcome it like a long lost lover caressing your body. Now there is the winds in December that blows in off the snow in the prairies, and it is about as welcome as hornets nest at a July 4th's picnic.

Now what about when it gusts to the point of hurricaine style winds? They too can be truly traumatizing! Lets not forget the tornado style winds we seem to experience every year! Well when you get winds that is are hard enough to move objects 5 or six miles that generally take a medium size truck or tractor and a strong trailer to carry them. You have to appreciate Mother Nature when she produces winds like this!

(click on the picture itself and you should be able to expand them for better viewing pleasure)

Now you have to marvel at the fact these bails that you are looking at are ones that you see in your local farmers field. They generally are 7 feet tall and 7 or so feet round, and weighs about 1600 lbs!

Now you can view, and marvel the fact objects of this size could be compared to the likes of something as big as Paul Bunions breakfast cereal. Strewn around a field like a child's toy box after a Saturday afternoon play date.

Wow mother nature you have my attention. I respect you as much as a criminal respects a police officer with an itchy trigger finger, after looking at him through his sites of his service revolver while standing with him at close range.

Until next time remember honesty may be the best policy, but it's important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.

I would like to thank TMC for the email. I am not sure who took the pics, but they are truly amazing. Hats off to you for the great camera skills, who ever you are!
